Green Plantain Sweet & Sour Curry

Green Plantain: 1, chopped
Onion: 1 small, chopped
Green chillies: 2 slit
Coriander/Cumin pd. (dhania jeera pd.): 2 tsp
Tamarind: small lemon size tamarind soaked in 1/2 cup hot water
Jaggery (Gud): 20 gms
Chili pd: 1tsp
Salt: to taste
Turmeric pd.:
Water: 2 cups
Oil: 2 tsp

Tempering:
Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
Garlic pods: 2 crushed
Spilt urad dal (split black gram): 1/2 tsp
Chana dal (split bengal gram): 1/2 tsp
Dry red chillies: 2, broken into bits
Curry leaves: 1 stalk

Heat oil in a saucepan. Once hot, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Next, add all the rest of the tempering ingredients, taking care not to let it burn. Once the color changes, add the onions, green chillies and turmeric powder. Toss well and sauté till onions are soft and slightly caramelized. Add plantain pieces and chili powder toss well. Cook covered till soft. Heat tamarind and water in the microwave for 30 seconds. You can also soak tamarind in hot water instead. Strain and keep paste aside. Add salt and tamarind paste to taste. Add rest of water and bring to boil. Cover and cook till oil floats on top. Serve with rice.
